Last week we lost one of the greats. We grew up to his music and rhymes. Phife Dawg from the group A Tribe Called Quest recently passed away after a long battle with diabetes. His life impacted Hip Hop in a monumental way.

From 1991’s The Low End Theory , 1993’s Midnight Marauders, 1996 Beat’s Rhymes & Life, these were influential records that were played on heavy rotation throughout our childhoods.

Phife Dawg, Q-Tip, Jerobi and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad founded the group A Tribe Called Quest. They defined our youth and in my views they were Hip Hop. Their poetry and layered production on songs like “Award Tour” and “Electric Relaxation” gave them critical acclaim.

Yesterday, ATCQ held “The Celebration of Phife” at St. Alban’s Memorial Park in Queens, N.Y. The ceremony included speeches and performances from D’Angelo, The Roots, Q-Tip, KRS-one, Kanye West, Andre 3000 + others.

You can watch a clip from the memorial below as well as some other classic music video’s from A Tribe Called Quest. RIP Malik Izaak Taylor aka Phife Dawg (1970-2016).
